The leasing company says: take leasing, you save capital. Your bank says: take a loan, you save over the years. Both are right. It depends on your numbers. This calculator compares the costs. Leasing against buying. Over the same time. With residual value and interest honestly included.

How the calculator works

For leasing, the calculator adds the down payment. Plus the leasing rate times months. Done. For buying it works out the monthly rate. From price, interest and term. Times months. Then it takes off the residual value at the end. The residual is what the car is worth after. The difference shows which is cheaper for you.

What Fahrly does for you

You do this math once per car. Over the years the hidden costs show up. Excess kilometers on the lease. Repairs in year three on the bought car. Workshop downtime. Fahrly's Fleet Management module stores the full history for every car. Purchase data. Lease details. Real service costs. TUEV history. Residual. When you pick the next car in two years, you have real numbers from last time. Not the seller's optimistic pitch.

Yesterday's numbers help tomorrow's decision. So you pick the next car with your head. Not your gut.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

When does leasing pay off?

Leasing pays off when you swap the car every 3 to 4 years. That means always a modern car and less repair. Also good: when you don't want to tie up your money. Or when you don't want to carry the residual value risk.

When does buying pay off?

Buying pays off when you use the car more than 5 years. Or when you have cash and don't need a loan. Or when you drive more kilometers than the lease allows. Usually that's 20,000 to 30,000 km per year. Extra-kilometer fees make leasing expensive fast.

What matters about residual value?

The residual is the market value of the car after your term. A Mietwagen with 200,000 km has more wear. Realistic numbers for an E-Class: 30 to 40 percent of the purchase price after 4 years. For a VW Passat, less.
